Top Tips when requesting a referee statement

Over the course of my career, I have had the pleasure of writing hundreds of referee statements for current students, former students and colleagues etc. I am always happy to support where I can but it is distinctly easier to do so when the applicant supports me in the process!

The majority of reference requests simply ask in basic terms whether I am willing to be a referee and for what job/course. Usually that is it. For current students, this isn't so much of an issue as I usually have a decent understand of their current set up and relevant experiences. Getting this from graduates, who in some cases may have graduated from their course nearly 10 years ago, having no information about their experiences since graduating is an entirely missed opportunity.

I have put together some top tips which are designed primarily for students and graduates, but can be used by university tutors, careers advisors etc as resources for their own students.

Please feel free to use these as you see fit so we can write the best possible referee statements for our students and graduates! These are downloadable as Powerpoint slides below.
